报告摘要:

  1. In the forest products industry, the use of smartphones has increased. There are needs in the market to measure certain properties such as stiffness of wood materials. Devices currently available in the market for consumers are unaffordable and unpractical. Thus, Mississippi State University developed a smartphone application (App) that can measure stiffness. Smart Thumper is an affordable stiffness measuring mechanism that can be used as one of the tools to ultimately ensure the sound structure design and safe building constructions.

  2. Mass timber is a relatively new construction method. It is still penetrating and expanding its share in construction markets around the world. Structural engineered wood products (EWPs) are developed for specific end applications utilizing wood boards, strands, particles, fibers, or veneers which are bonded using either chemical adhesives or mechanical fasteners. Compared to solid wood products, the engineered products are more dimensionally stable and have less variability in their mechanical properties. However, the use of natural raw material still makes them dimensionally vulnerable to environmental factors, such as relative humidity, which are significantly governed by climates. Thus, the EWPs manufactured in Mississippi targeted for the building material markets of Southeastern United States need to take the attributes of the region’s humid subtropical climates and primary forest resources into account. This presentation will provide the audience with brief overviews and summaries of the projects at Dr. Lim research group, which were proposed to address the issues mentioned above.

  3. Mass timber products are a category of framing components that can be built with a variety of materials. Engineered wood products have become the backbone of the mass timber movement. Some of the most common mass timber structural elements used in buildings are glue-laminated beams (glulams), laminated veneer lumber (LVL) and cross laminated timber (CLT). However, wood is a natural material, susceptible to decay and termite attack. Termites cause billions of dollars in damage each year, and their primary food is wood. In the past few years, there has been an effort to expand the use of mass timber products, especially CLT products, in the U.S. However, no termite infestation study has been done for the product. The current research aims to evaluate the natural resistance of CLT against termite and also to propose an amendment to the AWPA E1 standard to accommodate test for large size sample such as CLT products.

  4. Over the last 75 years, steel and concrete bridges have dominated United States bridge markets. Wood surplus in the United States market has made wood bridge prices competitive with steel and concrete bridges for 1-3 spans. The goal of this project was to increase awareness of wood as a bridge construction material and to demonstrate the proper steps to construct a long lasting timber bridge.
